The Teams

Hannah, Simon and Betty

Simon

Simon.JPG

Name: Simon Gray

Born: September 1981

Now 25 I have already fallen in love with both Africa and Land Rovers. I travelled to South Africa in 2000 with my school on a rugby tour and again in 2001 with friends when we drove in a campervan around Regional South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. This second trip consolidated my fascination for the culture and the continent.

Educated at Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire and later at the University of the West of England Bristol, I intend to go to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in May after my return.

Hannah

Name: Hannah Platts

Born: November 1985

Born in Germany to military parents I have travelled a great deal and have always been encouraged to respect and work with people of different cultures. Travel has also been a love of mine compounded when I spent 5 weeks in the Amazon Jungle in Peru, and further in Tanzania, Kenya and Egypt. I will graduate from Bristol University in July 2007 and intend to join the police on my return to the UK.

Betty

Name: Betty

Born: Solihull 1998

Born at the Land Rover Specialist Vehicle Factory at Solihull Betty went straight into service with Southern Electric. Built as a working vehicle she already has many of the characteristics of the type of vehicle that is required for this trip. When retired by Southern Electric in 2006 she was sold to Mr Weldon of the New Forest as part of a batch of 5 ex-Southern Electric 130’s. We found her on eBay and thought she was perfect. She is currently being kitted out for her new life, as a fundraising expedition vehicle.

Georgie, Rob and Daphne

Name: Georgina Cowley

Born: December 1984

During my gap year I lived in Uganda for 9 months working as an HIV educator and development worker for SPW. Ever since leaving my village I have been dying to go back, to see if my work helped at all and to catch up with old friends. As a budding film maker I can’t wait to see the rest of Africa and to capture ‘the essence’ on film.

Once back in England the future is very uncertain so I want all the adventure I can get before starting the next part of my life.

 Rob

Name: Robert Dick

Born: June 1986

My trips to Africa so far have been limited to the North: Morocco and Egypt, but they have given rise to a desire to explore the continent more widely. I didn’t take a gap year before studying Biology at Bristol University and therefore have not yet had the chance to undertake a really long journey. This trip offers the adventure and challenge which I would like to experience before I knuckle down and decide what career to pursue.

Daphne

Name: Daphne

Born: South Africa 2000

Daphne is a well cared for girl with a sense of adventure. She loves to stretch her legs and speed along an open piece of tar. Daphne can't wait to visit Mozambique as this will be her first bit of off roading
